Book Series Top Picks for Tween Boys & Girls
Updated February 2020
Good Morning! After last week’s post about books I read in 2018 I had a couple requests for reading recommendations for middle schoolers. I asked my twelve year old son and thirteen year old daughter to tell me what their favorite book picks were over the past year. Almost all of the books that they listed were part of a series. I decided to compile a list of their 10 favorite book series for you here today.
It can be a little tricky to find appropriate books for tweens. Many tweens are reading at an adult level, but aren’t ready for some of the subject matter present in an adult book. I often use Common Sense Media as a resource before a visit to the library or when I am buying a book for my own children or as a gift for other children. Common Sense Media includes recommendations that you can filter by age, genre, topic, and popularity. Their reviews include what parents need to know about educational value, positive messages, role models, violence, sex, language, consumerism, drinking, drugs and smoking as well as user reviews, a summary of the story, if the book is any good, and what to talk to your kids about when they read the book.
I have arranged these book series in order of the recommended age listed on commonsensemedia.org. The majority of these series appeal to both boys and girls, with the exception of possibly The Selection Series and The Lunar Chronicles, which only my daughter has read. If you are interested in purchasing any of these series you can click on the picture to be taken directly to the amazon.com link. Click on the title to be taken to the commensensemedia.org review of the first book in each series.
