Cheddar Cheese Ball Appetizer

Happy Tuesday Friends! Are you ready for Halloween tomorrow? This is the first year that both of my kiddos will be off Trick-or-Treating on their own and my husband and I will have the opportunity to stay home and pass out candy together. I always look forward to the end of the night when the kids dump out their candy, take inventory of what they have collected and my husband and I can collect our parenting tax. He is usually paid in 3 Musketeers, while I prefer my cut to be from from the Reese’s Peanut Butter cup and Twix piles. Do you have a favorite favorite Halloween treat?

Today’s recipe is a cheddar cheese ball that my mom has been preparing for family gatherings and parties for as long as I can remember. I have continued the tradition of serving this delicious blend of sharp cheddar and cream cheese whenever I am hosting an event. During the fall I like to take the added step of transforming the cheese ball into a pumpkin shape for Halloween parties and Thanksgiving gatherings. It is an easy way to add a little fun to your cheese platter. This simple recipe requires little prep time, can be made in advance and is easy to transport. I like to prepare this in my KitchenAid food processor because I can shred the cheese, and mix the ingredients on one easy spot. The cheese ball can also be prepared with a handheld electric mixer or stand mixer.

Cheddar Cheese Ball Recipe

  • (2)  8 oz. pkg. of cream cheese
  • (1 ) 8 oz pkg. of cheddar cheese
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped onions
  • 1 clove minced garlic or 1/8 tsp garlic powder
  • finely chopped pecans
  • finely chopped parsley

Directions

Attach the shredding disc to the food processor to finely grate cheese. Transfer cheese to a bowl and replace shredding disc with the multi-purpose blade. Place the cream cheese in the bowl of the food processor and process until light and fluffy in texture. Add the grated cheese and process for 30 to 45 seconds. Stop the machine and scrape down the side of the bowl. It should be very smooth and completely combined. If it is not, process or mix another 30 seconds. Add the Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, onion and garlic and process until smooth.

Line a small bowl with plastic wrap. Spoon mixture into the lined bowl. Fold plastic wrap over mixture. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until firm.

Chop parsley. Combine pecan chips and parsley. Roll cheese ball in parsley and nut mixture. Serve with your favorite cracker, cut veggie or sliced apple. Enjoy!

How To Create a Pumpkin Shaped Cheese Ball

Wrap the cheddar cheese ball tightly with plastic wrap. Secure four rubber bands evenly around the perimeter of the cheese ball. Press down gently on the center of the cheese ball where the rubber bands converge. Refrigerate until shortly before you are ready to serve. Place a pretzel stick in the center of the pumpkin shaped cheese ball to create a stem.
