My Top Tips for Shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale
Have you gone online yet to preview the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale? This year’s #NSale looks a little different. First and foremost, it has been moved from July to August. Secondly, a catalogue will no longer arrive in your mailbox, but you will be able to preview ALL sale items online starting July 24th.
It’s not a secret that Nordstrom is one of my favorite spots to shop for clothing, shoes and accessories for the entire family. It is also often the first place I look when shopping for a special gift. Every summer I look forward to checking out the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in order to get a sneak peak of what trends will be big in the fall and stock up on essentials that never go out of style. Click here to see what I purchased in 2019. Many of these items tend to return year after year because they are so popular. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale can feel a bit overwhelming for even the most seasoned shopper due of the large quantity of items that are marked down. Today, I’m sharing my top tips to successfully find what you need at the 2020 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year. Happy Shopping!
Become a Nordstrom Cardholder Only Nordstrom cardmembers receive early access to the Anniversary Sale! Apply to be a Nordstrom cardholder before before August 18th and you will receive a $60 bonus note. Having a Nordstrom card will allow you to earn 3 reward points for every dollar you spend. Once you have collected 2,000 points Nordstrom will send you a $20 Nordstrom Note to use towards your next purchase. Cardmembers also receive personal double points days, alteration benefits, curbside pick-up and more… The amount of money you spend each year determines if you are an Insider, Influencer, Ambassador or Icon status. As your status increases, so do your rewards. If you don’t want to apply for a credit card, consider just becoming a Nordy Club Member. You will still receive bonus points, be the first to shop select brands, have access to beauty and style workshops, receive free basic alterations and more…
Shop Early Insider Nordstrom cardmembers have early access to the Anniversary Sale starting August 13th (Infuencer, Ambassador and Icon cardmembers receive even earlier access). Popular items tend to sell out quickly. Browse during the Preview so that you can purchase items that you know you want right off the bat. Items in your cart are not saved until you actually make the purchase. I type the brand and description of the items I already know I’ll be purchasing in the search bar and immediately add them to my cart and proceed to checkout. Last year some items sold out within the first couple hours of early access to the Anniversary Sale. If an item you are interested in has sold out, check back before the sale ends. I’ve gotten lucky and found the item available again a couple days later due to restocks and returns.
Download the Nordstrom App The Nordstrom App makes shopping even easier on your device. Download the app now and get $20 off
your first $150 app purchase. Nordstrom just added a new feature to their app that allows you to get notified when items in your Wish List and Shopping Bag are back in stock. This is especially helpful during the Anniversary Sale when items fly off the shelves, but may be restocked due to returns before the sale ends. The app also allows you to request curbside pickup, track rewards, get personalized recommendations, and see what is in stock at your local store (my favorite feature when I need to shop for a last minute gift).
Use Filters There are thousands of items discounted during the Anniversary Sale. It would take you days to browse through everything on the sale pages. During the Preview, save items that you would like to buy to your Wishlist so that you can move them to your shopping cart when the sale officially starts. I narrow the search down by picking a particular category, then entering my size, favorite brands and styles. For example last year I was on the hunt for a dressy pair of black slacks. I narrowed down my search by clicking on the following filters: pants, wide leg, solid, black, under $100. Here are the brands I will be paying special attention to during the Anniversary Sale.
- Women’s Clothing: 1901, Barefoot Dreams, Bobeau, Caslon, Eliza J, Gibson, Halogen, Hanky Panky, Hinge, Hue, Leith, Madewell, Make + Model, Natori, PAIGE, Pleione, Treasure and Bond, Zella
- Women’s Shoes: Caslon, Jeffrey Campbell, Sam Edelman, Sole Society, Tory Burch, Ugg, Vince Camuto,
- Jewelry: Alex & Ani, BaubleBar, Gorjana, KATE SPADE, Kendra Scott
- Men’s Clothing: 1901, AG, The North Face, Thomas Dean, Tommy, Bahama, vineyard vines
- Men’s Shoes: Allen, Edmonds, ASICS, Cole Haan, ECCO, Onitsuka Tiger
- Girls’s Clothing & Shoes: Converse, Mini Boden, Tea Collection, The North Face, Treasure and Bond, Tucker + Tate, Truly Me, Us Angels, Vans, Zella Girl
- Boy’s Clothing & Shoes: Nike, Quicksilver, Tucker + Tate, Under Armour, vineyard vines, Volcom
Buy Multiple Sizes If you aren’t sure what size to order, buy multiple sizes and return what doesn’t fit. I have made the mistake of ordering an item that was a brand which I was unfamiliar with the sizing. When the item arrived, it was too large and the smaller size was no longer available. I often order both petite and regular sizes. At 5’4 it is always a toss up which one will fit better.
Have a Back-up Plan If the item you want isn’t available in the size or color that you want, purchase the item in a different color or size. The size and color you want may become available again after the sale and you will be able to exchange what you bought while at the same time taking advantage of the sale price.
Shop for Gifts I love to do some of my holiday shopping during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale because I am able to buy gifts that would normally be priced out of our holiday shopping budget. Later, these gifts will go back to being full price during the traditional holiday shopping season. The recipient of the gift will be able to return or exchange the item easily to Nordstrom if it doesn’t fit or suit their style because of Nordstrom’s AMAZING return policy. Most of these items will still be available throughout the year in case the recipient needs to exchange their gift for a different color or size. I feel more relaxed during the holiday season because I’m not rushing around trying to find gifts for everyone on my list during this busy time of year. Check out this post to see what some of my favorite Nordstrom gifts to both give and receive.
Use One of Your Personal Double Points Days. My biggest Nordstrom shopping day tends to be during the Anniversary Sale. Earning double points in the store and online allows me to earn a reward note to buy something in the future that might not be on sale. The great thing about personal double reward days is that you can make multiple transactions online and in the store during the 24 hour period you choose and receive double the points for each and every purchase.
Don’t get Carried Away It is easy to over spend in all of the excitement. The biggest reason to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is to save on items that you would already be buying, but that rarely or never go on sale. I keep a list on my phone year round of items that my family has outgrown or need to be replaced and gift ideas I’ve collected over the year so that I have a plan and don’t just buy an item on impulse. I focus my attention on classic items that will never go out of style vs. trendy items that will be on the clearance rack by next season. This year I’ll be replacing a couple of my Natori bras and buying Nike gear in the next size up for my son.
