My Top Tips for Shopping the 2021 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Are you shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year? This morning I sat down with a cup of coffee and had a good long scroll through the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Preview pages. It was a fun reprieve from unpacking and restocking our fridge after spending a long weekend away for the 4th. I was excited to see that many of my family’s wardrobe staples were included in the sale again this year. If you don’t have time to sift through the sale pages, check back in the next couple days to see my #Nsale2021 picks. As always, I’m only sharing items I’m buying or have already bought in the past and would recommend to my closest friends. It’s not a secret that Nordstrom is one of my favorite spots to shop for clothing, shoes and accessories for the entire family. It is also often the first place I look when shopping for a special gift. Every summer I look forward to checking out the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale in order to get a sneak peak of what trends will be big in the fall and stock up on essentials that never go out of style. Click here to see what I purchased in 2020. Many of these items tend to return year after year because they are so popular. The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale can feel a bit overwhelming for even the most seasoned shopper due of the large quantity of items that are marked down and it can be easy to get carried away. Today, I’m sharing my top tips to successfully find what you need at the 2021 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale this year. Happy Shopping!

Become a Nordstrom Cardholder Only Nordstrom cardmembers receive early access to the Anniversary Sale! Apply to be a Nordstrom cardholder before before July 27th and you will receive a $60 bonus note for use on a future purchase. Having a Nordstrom card will allow you to earn at least 2 reward points for every dollar you spend. Once you have collected 1,000 points Nordstrom will send you a $10 Nordstrom Note to use towards your next purchase. Cardmembers also receive personal double points days, alteration benefits, curbside pick-up and more… The amount of money you spend each year determines if you are Influencer, Ambassador or Icon status. As your status increases, so do your rewards. If you don’t want to apply for a credit card, consider just becoming a Nordy Club Member. You will still receive bonus points, be the first to shop select brands, have access to beauty and style workshops, receive free basic alterations and more…

Create a Wish List During the Preview, save items that you would like to buy to your wish list so that you can move them to your shopping cart when the sale officially starts. I create a wish list for each person in my immediate family, plus a general wish list containing items that would make great gifts for friends and family. We take stock of our closets to determine which closet staples we’ve worn out or outgrown. Together or separately each person adds their “wants” and “needs” to their wish list. I noticed last year that if I didn’t add an Anniversary Sale item to my wish list right away, I might not find it later. Now, I add everything that catches my eye to the wish list and pare it down later once I determine what will best fit our needs. For example, my son needs a new pair of jeans. I added 4 pairs to his wish list. We were able to compare them next to each other on the wish list and keep the pair that appealed to him most before deleting the rest. I usually select at least one “want” from everybody’s wish list to stash away as a future gift. I leave unpurchased items on my wish list to offer inspiration the next time I’m stuck on what to buy someone as a gift.

Shop Early Influencer Nordstrom cardmembers have early access to the Anniversary Sale starting July 16 (Ambassador and Icon cardmembers receive even earlier access). Popular items tend to sell out quickly. Browse during the Preview and add them to your Wish List so that you can quickly add items to your cart once the sale starts. Items in your cart are not saved until you actually make the purchase. Last year some items sold out within the first couple hours of early access to the Anniversary Sale. If an item you are interested in has sold out, check back before the sale ends. I’ve gotten lucky and found the item available again a couple days later due to restocks and returns.

Download the Nordstrom App The Nordstrom App makes shopping even easier on your device. Nordstrom added a feature to their app last year that allows you to get notified when items in your Wish List and Shopping Bag are back in stock or goes on sale. This is especially helpful during the Anniversary Sale when items fly off the shelves, but may be restocked due to returns before the sale ends. The app also allows you to request curbside pickup, track rewards, get personalized recommendations, and see what is in stock at your local store (my favorite feature when I need to shop for a last minute gift).

Use Filters There are thousands of items discounted during the Anniversary Sale. It would take you days to browse through everything on the sale pages. I narrow the search down by picking a particular category, then entering my size, favorite brands and styles. For example when I was on the hunt for a dressy pair of black slacks. I narrowed down my search by clicking on the following filters: pants, wide leg, solid, black, under $100. Here are the brands I will be paying special attention to during the Anniversary Sale.

  • Women’s Clothing: Barefoot Dreams, Caslon, Eliza J, Good American, Halogen, Hanky Panky, Honeydew, Julia Jordan, Madewell, Natori, PAIGE, SPANX, Treasure and Bond, Zella
  • Women’s Shoes: Caslon, Jeffrey Campbell, Jenny Kayne, Sam Edelman, Tory Burch, Ugg, Vince Camuto,
  • Jewelry: BaubleBar, Gorjana, KATE SPADE, Kendra Scott
  • Men’s Clothing: AG, The North Face, Stance, Thomas Dean, Tommy Bahama, TravisMathew, vineyard vines
  • Men’s Shoes: Allen Edmonds, ASICS, Cole Haan, ECCO, Onitsuka Tiger
  • Girls’s Clothing & Shoes: Converse, Peek Aren’t You Curious, The North Face, Tucker + Tate, Truly Me, Vans, Zella Girl
  • Teen Girl’s Clothing & Shoes: BDG Urban Outfitters, Billabong, BP, Champion, Free People, Nike, Vans,
  • Boy’s Clothing & Shoes: Nike, Quicksilver, Tucker + Tate, Under Armour, Vans, vineyard vines, Volcom
  • Teen Boy’s Clothing & Shoes: Adidas, BP, Nike, O’Neil, Quicksilver, Stance, Treasure & Bond, Vans, vineyard vines, Volcom

Buy Multiple Sizes If you aren’t sure what size to order, buy multiple sizes and return what doesn’t fit. I have made the mistake of ordering an item that was a brand which I was unfamiliar with the sizing. When the item arrived, it was too large and the smaller size was no longer available. I often order both petite and regular sizes. At 5’4 it is always a toss up which one will fit better.

Have a Back-up Plan If the item you want isn’t available in the size or color that you want, purchase the item in a different color or size. The size and color you want may become available again after the sale and you will be able to exchange what you bought while at the same time taking advantage of the sale price.

Shop for Gifts I love to do some of my holiday shopping during the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale because I am able to buy gifts that would normally be priced out of our holiday shopping budget. Later, these gifts will go back to being full price during the traditional holiday shopping season. The recipient of the gift will be able to return or exchange the item easily to Nordstrom if it doesn’t fit or suit their style because of Nordstrom’s AMAZING return policy. Most of these items will still be available throughout the year in case the recipient needs to exchange their gift for a different color or size. I feel more relaxed during the holiday season because I’m not rushing around trying to find gifts for everyone on my list during this busy time of year. Check out this post to see what some of my favorite Nordstrom gifts to both give and receive.

Use One of Your Personal Double Points Days. My biggest Nordstrom shopping day tends to be during the Anniversary Sale. Earning double points in the store and online allows me to earn a reward note to buy something in the future that might not be on sale. The great thing about personal double reward days is that you can make multiple transactions online and in the store during the 24 hour period you choose and receive double the points for each and every purchase.

Don’t get Carried Away It is easy to over spend in all of the excitement. The biggest reason to shop the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is to save on items that you would already be buying, but that rarely or never go on sale. I focus my attention on classic items that will never go out of style vs. trendy items that will be on the clearance rack by next season. This year I’ll be replacing a couple of my Natori bras and buying Nike gear in the next size up for my son.
